Seems Obvious, Maybe Not…

GarageDoorBreakInMain1

Recently I switched from listening to my iPod music to watching the news at 5am while doing my cardio workouts during the week. Today I came across a very interesting story. Parking your car outside of your garage could be very dangerous. How many people have a garage door opener on their sun visor? Can you image if someone broke into your car and then clicked on your remote opening your garage door, now leading into your house? This happened to a family in the mid-west as they were held up at gun point. Luckily no one was injured but it’s probably a situation many people don’t think about. Definitely something to be aware of even more so during the holiday season when break-ins are at their peak this time of year. Here are a few more tips to keep you safe this holiday season:

  • Try not to do your holiday shopping late at night and if possible shop with someone. If walking to your car alone at night be aware of your surroundings and have your keys in hand

  • If you and your family are planning on being away from home for an extended amount of time (i.e. more than one week) make a quick phone call to your local police department. They will send policemen out to patrol the area a few times per day to make sure everything is secure.

  • With so many cars these days having push starts, make sure when you pull into a home garage that you’re not distracted and you turn the car off before walking inside. Sounds obvious, but cars run so quietly and if talking on a cell phone, it’s easy to become distracted. The gas Carbon Monoxide is odorless, and can cause symptoms similar to the Flu however it’s fatal if not caught in time.

Have a Safe & Happy Holiday Season!
